Society for Science & the Public is currently not eligible for a Leadership & Adaptability score because we have not received its L&A survey responses. This score represents Form 990 data from 2019, the latest year published by the IRS. GuideStar worked with BoardSource, the national leader in nonprofit board leadership and governance, to create this section. Unlock nonprofit financial insights that will help you make more informed decisions.

Perceptions of where the scientific community stands on both climate change and evolution tend to be associated with individual views on the issue. Americans recognize the accomplishments of scientists in key fields and, despite considerable dispute about the role of government in other realms, there is broad public support for government investment in scientific research. Organizations shall have a board of directors that provides adequate oversight of the charity’s operations and its staff.

Established in 1921, the Society is a nonprofit whose vision is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement. We check the charity’s website to see if it has published its audited financial statements for the fiscal year represented by the most recently filed IRS Form 990. It is important for donors to have easy access to this financial report to help determine if the organization is managing its financial resources well. We currently rate charities on whether or not they publish their audit on their website. This measure reflects the percent of its total expenses a charity spends on the programs and services it exists to deliver. Dividing a charity’s average program expenses by its average total functional expenses yields this percentage.

In the future, we will also track and rate whether or not a charity keeps minutes for its committee meetings. All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without an increasing number of supporters including the 2,100 volunteers and judges who participate in our science fairs, our generous corporate sponsors, and the 10,000 other financial supporters who help fund all our work. 4) embrace underserved communities through our research workshops for their teachers, our Advocate Program for their mentors, and our journalism that draws more young people into the world of scientific thinking and innovation. 2) share the power and wonder of science by producing top-flight science journalism focused on timeliness, variety, accuracy, and readability. Each year, only 40 finalists are selected from the nearly 2,000 students who enter our Science Talent Search, the longest-running and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors in the country.

Follow up reports planned for later this year will analyze views of the general public in more detail, especially by demographic, religious, and political subgroups. And, some results from the survey of AAAS scientists will be presented in a follow-up report in mid-February. When it comes to climate change and evolution, a majority of adults see scientists as generally in agreement that the earth is getting warmer due to human activity (57%) or that humans have evolved over time (66%), though a sizeable minority see scientists as divided over each.
